FRENCH AIR RACE.
NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH
MAN ALMOST STRANGLED.

Five competitors, including Herbert Jame§ (England), Brack Papa (Italy), and three Frenchmen, competed in the 180mile air race for the Deutsch Delameurthe Cup and 60,000 francs. Tho raco was won by. Lasne (France) in 62m. lis.
James, who was favourite, driving a 450 horse power machine, nearly lost lrifl life owing to strangulation in mid-air. Ke had tied a map around his neck, and while travelling at a speed of 210 miles an hc;ir the force of the wind Wow the papers and caused the string to tighten z round his neck. James managed to prevent suffocation, but lost the map, so ho abandoned the contest.
