VOLUNTEERS FOR SERVICE.
YESTERDAY'S ENROLMENTS.
PERMANENT MEN DEBARRED The enrolment of men willing to serve overseas if necessary proceeded at a brisk rate yesterday at the Drill Hall. During the day two nurses, five officers, and 38 other ranks handed in- their names. In event of the mobilisation of a Northern Command quota for overseaaservice being rendered necessary, the base camp will probably be situated at the Avondale racecourse. It had been intended to use the Narrow Neck camp if the. emergency arose, but, owing to the difficulty of harbour transport, it has now been decided by the Command, authorities to form the camp at Avondale if more than one company should be required. An arrangement has. accordingly been mad** with the Avondale Jockey Club for the use of the site. No applications from members of the New Zealand Permanent Force to join a New Zealand Expeditionary Force are to be considered. The following statement bearing on the position was issued yesterday by Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Duigan, chief staff officer of the Norther* Command: — "Numerous applications having been received from officers and other ranks! of the Permanent Forces to join fch* Expeditionary Force, all concerned are notified that, while their action is appreciated, it is regretted that these apolicationß cannot be entertained. The efficiency of the forces in New Zealand, the vast amount of work to be carried out in organising, equipping, and despatching m Expeditionary - orce overseas, which can only be satisfactorily performed by trained officers and men, renders it necessary to limit the number of permanent officers and other ranks that can be spared from their* present duties. All ranks are therefore informed that their applications for service will not be received, but they will be detailed for appointments and duties as required, in the interests of the serviceeither in New Zealand or in the Expeditionary Force should a force be organised."
