CARRIAGE BY MOTOR.
PAEROA TO WAIHI. RAIL FREIGHT LOWERED. ■ REDUCED SERVICE POSSIBLE [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WAIHI. Wednesday. The authorities of the Railway Department are concerned at the recent innovation of a motor-lorry goods service between Paeroa and Waihi, which provides for the conveyance of goods direct from the Northern Steamship Company's goodsshed at Puke wharf to Waihi, and is such as to cause a falling off of business to the railway on the Waihi-Paeroa section. The service, it is claimed by the department, is already on the generous side in proportion to the goods handled, but with opposition on the road the department feels compelled to consider the question of reducing tho service, as it does not think the present service warrants expenditure on ite upkeep. The public views with alarm the prospect of a reduction, but whether any protest will be effective with the department remains to he seen.
