THE ELECTORAL ROLLS.
REMOVAL OF NAMES. FURTHER COMPLAINT MADE. POSITION IN WAITOMO. [b? telecraph.—special reporter] WELLINGTON. Wedneeday The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. T. M. WiHord, asked the Prime Minister today what arrangements had been made in regard to the rolls for the coming election. He had been receiving complaints from different parts of New Zealand regarding the incorrectness of the rolls. In Waitomo it was stated there were 3000 names left off the rolls. One man, who had been in the district for 15 years, had found that his name had been removed. This, added Mr. Wilford, was not, and could not be made a party question, and the rolls should dp made as complete as possible. The Prime Minister said similar questions had already been asked and answered. That was quite proper because the matter was of importance not only to members of Prliament, but to the whole of the people as well. As far as the Electoral Department was concerned, nothing would bo left undone to obtain the desired object. He was in almost daily communication with the heads of the department and they were quite as anxious as ho was that the rolls should be satisfactorily completed The question that was at present engaging their attention was whether the circumstances warranted the printinsof two supplementary rolls. He was inclined to think that this should be arranged.
Mr. G. Witty (Riccarton) said he knew of an instance in which a man, who had berfn in a district for 40 years, had had his name struck off the roll. He suggested that officials should make a house to house call. Mr. Massey said he did not think it was too much to ask electors, or would-be electors, to look after their own interests. An Hon. Member: But they do not know. Mr. Massey : Surely the position i» wellknown by now on account of the cussions that have taken place here. Nineteen out of every 20 electors must know what has happened. There were, he added, copies of the rolls at any post office. Anything else ho could do, he would be glad to do.
