THE LEMON INDUSTRY.
VALUE OF POOL SYSTEM. SUCCESS IN TAURANGA. [BT TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TATJRANGA. Wednesday. A well-attended meeting of members of the Citrus and Fruitgrowers' Association last night was addressed by Mr. T. W. Attwood, president and managing director of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation. Mr. Attwood stressed the necessity for growers uniting for the marketing of their produce. He referred to the steps taken by the meat-producers and the combined movement by dairy farmers in connection with the marketing of their produce. He detailed some of the achievements of the Fruitgrowers' Federation in the direction of promoting the interests of the fruit industry. Mr. H. P. Bryan, president of the association, stated that the pooling system had shown the value of a standard pack under one brand. There was absolutely no question of going back to the old style of each grower marketing his own lemons under his own brand. He was firmly convinced that it was in the best interests of the industry that the Auckland and Tauranga citrus growers should combine and have only one standard pack. Mr. Harvey Turner, who was present, furnished details concerning the curing and marketing of lemons. A motion was unanimously carried in favour of a continuance of the curing and pool system for another two years. It was stated that the Auckland citrus growers were acting similarly. The New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation intimated that it had decided fo grant a subsidy up to £2S (£ for £) for ' the purpose of advertising lemons. Excellent samples of lemon peel from the Auckland factory were exhibited. Californian and New Zealand lemons in a cured condition were exhibited. It was readily admitted that the New Zealand lemons were superior to the imported.
