RUGBY CONTESTS.

REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES.

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY WINS.

OTAGO DEFEATS WELLINGTON

The Rugby Union representative matches I played on Saturday were limited to' two ; important, contests, Otago and Wellington ; at Dunedin, and Wangauui touring team ; against Wellington, at. Wellington. Good I weather favoured the contests in these centres, and Dunedin again registered another large attendance. 10.000 spectators being present at Carisbrook on the occasion of the 28th. match of the series bej tween these teams. Defeating Wellington by 27 points to 18, Otago has established ■ a tecord for the province, having defeated all the representative teams in turn and I may justly be termed the champion provincial team of New Zealand.

The Wangauui touring team played the Wellington home team at Athletic Park, securing a sensational win on the call of time by 19 points to 15. The Sydney University touring team played its fifth match of the New Zealand tour at Christchurch. defeating Canterbun- College by 13 points to 9. The following are the results :— Otago 27 defeated Wellington 18 Wangauui 19 ~ Wellington 15 Sydney Urn". 13 ~ Canty. Col. 9

J ' SYDNEY UNIVERSITY WIN. |CANTERBURY COLLEGE BEATEN. J [BY. TELEGRAPII. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Saturday. It was generally expected that bright, ! spectacular football would mark the | meeting of Sydney University and Canterbury College. It was also expected that the visitors would control the game and put up a fairly large score. However, the 5000 or 6000 spectators witnessed neither of these things. The game produced very ordinary football, the Canterbury College lost by only 13 points to 9. Only now and again was there a flash of pretty back play, and for the greater part of the match the forwards were in charge. The Canterbury forwards excelled themselves, and no doubt it was their bustling play that kept tho visiting backs fairly quiet. Tho Sydney men showed themselves fairly adept at starting passing rushes, even in their own twenty-five, but on the whole their handling and passing were poor, and they seemed to lack the necessary finish to a movement. Raymond, their star back, was well marked, and had little chance to do much. Crackenthorpe, Woodhead, and Morgan made good impressions. The Canterbury forwards were workers to a man, and tackled excellently. Jackson, Galbraith, and Lansbie.ri wero about tho best. Dcwar, Robertson, and Smart wero the pick of the backs. On the whole, the game was disappointing, and if the Sydney team represented the strongest club in New South Wales it is rather hard to understand on yesterday's play how the All Blacks were beaten in two games out of three. Raymond. Black, and Foote scored for the winners, Raysmith converting two, •while for Canterbury Bennett scored a try and kicked two penalty goals.

WANGANUI BEAT WELLINGTON. NINETEEN POINTS TO FIFTEEN. (BE TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.} WELLINGTON. Saturday. The Wellington-Wanganui representative Rugby match resulted in a victory for Wanganui by 19 points to 15, the winning try being scored right on the call of time. Tho weather was delightful, a breeze from the north favouring Wellington in the first spell. During the first half the play did not at any stage reach a very high standard, a weakness in exchanges proclaiming the players to be a long way from tho interprovincial representatives of the past. In the first half Wellington scored 8 points— a penalty goal by Nicholls and a try by Calcinai, converted by Nicholls. When ends were changed things brightened up considerably, although the efforts of tho players in the main were on the amateurish side, Tilyard scored a clever try for Wellington from a pass by Nicholls" just after the resumption, and shortly afterwards the same player potted a goal from the field. Just prior to the latter happening Collier scored a try for Wanganui. For the remainder of the game the visitors dominated the play. Lockett, Ross, Clamence, and Bellis each scored a try, Delves converting two of them. Tho try by Bellis was a particularly good one, the ball being handled by six Wanganui players.

OTAOO WINS AGAIN. DEFEAT OF WELLINGTON. [BX TELEGRAPH. —PEESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Saturday. The good fortune which has attended the Otago Rugby Union during the current season in the matter of weather was maintained to-day, when Otago met Wellington before an attendance of about 10,000 spectators. After even play following the kick-off, passing ensued among the Otago backs, Murray obtaining a pass from Dickinson, who ran right to the line and passed to Owles, who only had to cross the line unopposed, but the Otago wing throequarter, knocked on badly, and lost a chance. From the ensuing scrum, Mathieson got the ball well away to Dickinson, who transferred to Murray, who sent on to Stewart, to open the scoring for Otago. Bell's kick missed. A loose rush followed by the Otago pack, and several/of the forwards broke through the defence, Knox finishing off by scoring. Owles missed with the kick at goal. Otago continued to attack, and criss-cross passing between Dickinson ;uid Townsend ended in the first-named scoring behind the posts. Bell converted. Ot-ago 11, Wellington 0. From half-way Richardson and Coombes set the Otago backs in motion, and Townsend made a pood opening and passed to Dickinson, who had a clear run in. Bell kicked a goal. Otago 16. Wellington 3. Weak play bv Gilchrist and Mansfield let the blue forwards through, ami a good passing bout ended. Stewart racing across. Owles failed with the kick. King placed his side in an at- j tacking posit ion by cutting off a pass, j and Mansfield, with a nice run, badly beat Dickinson and passed to Mahony, to scoro a try which was converted by Christopherson. Otago 19, Wellington 8. The blue forwards came away again, and a passing rush from a scrum ended in Owles scoring, the tirst spell ending without further incident. Otago 22, WeltVpherson. Otago 19, Wellington 8. Yin the second spell Otago played with thAsun behind them. OUgo at once set up \i strong attack which was met by sounal defence, and play returned to half way/YMis-fielding by Bell gave the visitors afV advantage, and the forwards l.ept ip thA pressure against lamentable defence oln the part of Otago, I'ringle eventually up from ragged play and ooiug ovor, (.'hristopherson missed the kick at goal. \ A moment later, weak play by Bell gaveVThomas a chance, and the 'Wellington wikigcr went in unopposed to scoro a try the posts. Christopherson missed \\n easy kick. Otag., ~9,, Wellington 14. V Weak defence by Otago nb-ed Wellington \ n an attacking position, and after \ some scrambling play Mahonev pott&d a nice goal from aa uifficult angle. OtWo 27, Wellington 18 The visitors contintled to make the most of the numerous knistakes on the part of j Otago, and thel forwards, playing with | plenty of dash Wo the end, had Otaco thinking hard, 'Pringle had a shot from well out, and from a good attempt the ball struck the cross-bar. Townsend cleared. Wellington continued to press and the closing incident in a mediocre display was d pot by Christophorson which just mifssed. The final score was: ' Otago .V .. , a 27 Wellington/ .» „ „ ".18
