GREAT RACERS AT RANDWICK

BEAUFORD DEFEATS GLOAMING.

GOOD RACE ON HEAVY TRACK.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 9,

Sydney Tattersalls held their Spring Meeting at Randwick to-day, and with those great galloper?, Beauford and Gloaming, booked to measure strides in the Chelmsford Stakes an attendance of between 50.000 and 60,000 was registered, which is a record for Tattersall's Club. Steady rain which fell during the forenoon failed to diminish the enthusiasm, in the Beauford-Gloaming contest, though a plethora of macintoshes and wet weather attire robbed Randwick of the bright, gay setting worthy of the occasion. After lunch the weather cleared beautifully, but the track was heavy. The feature of the meeting between Beauford and Gloaming was remarkablo for the even division of opinion of the public and the turf tipsters in their fancies, witb. Beauford slightly in favour. Much, it was argued, depended on the post positions. Gloaming drew seven and Beauford 14. THE RACECHELMSFORD STAKES, of £1000; weight-for-age, with penalties aud allowances: 1 mile 1 fur. W. H. Mackay's b g Beauford, 6yrs.. by Beau Soult—Bluoford, 9.8. including 7lb. penalty (A. Wood) . . . . 1 G. D. Greenwood's b g Gloaming, aged, by The Welkin— Light. 9.8, including 71b. penalty (G. Young) .... . . 2 N. Falkiner's br h David. Syrs., by Baueretock—Linotpye, 9-11. including 71b. penalty (W Duncan) >> Fourteen started. Gloaming jumped off in front immediately. while Beauford was slightly left. Passing the mile post Gloaming led Tressayr. with Beauford moving into third Place. Gloaming. Tressayr and Toorak led the field round the bend, at which point Beauford was seemingly unable to overtake the leaders." Furious challenged Gloaming entering the straight, at which point Beauford came fast, and the son of Beau Soult overtook Gloaming at the distance. Gl° an \ ln ß responded gamely, to the call* of his rider, but he was unable to head Beauford, who won by three-quarters of a. length- Gloaming, waa a auarW of a length in front of David. Tims, lm 53s- . . . In the course of an interview aftor the race, R. J. Mason, trainer of Gloaming, stated that Gloamins was as fit a3 he could be made, and that his horse was famy and squarety beaten.' Two years aso it might have been different, as Gloaming u not so young as he was. Beauford, he said, is undoubtedly a great galloper. . Beauford's stock appreciably increased as a result of his oonqucst, but the admirers of Gloaming are satisfied with the lattcr's performance on the heavy going. The minor racea resulted as follawa:

POOR FIELD OF CONTESTANTS; A. and N.Z. LONDON. Sept. 8. The scratching of all tho favourites for the St. Leger leaves only second-class horses in the race. It is doubtful if it «ver has been contested by euch a poor lot. Lord Woolavinston's pair. Preston Grange (by Hurry On) and Fred Power (by Charles O'Malley), seem to be the best left in. A? they are beins trained in different fctables, the former at P. P. Gilpin's and the latter at F. Darling's, Lord "Woolavington '"nterid? to run both colts on their merits. Tho other horses mentioned as having a chance are Villars (by Sun Mar). Geylonesc (by Willonyx) and Oorcyrian (by Corcyra). The i«nw> is regarded as co very open that it is impossible to mal a market. ?nd oven with a fairly large- shade of odds offered on the field no businese of note is being transacted on the. race. • Villars and Preston Grange are th<favourite* for the St. Lesr»r.
