That offenders never seem to invent any stories other than those of the übiquitous canvasser was the substance of an observation made by Mr. F. K. Hunt S-M., in dealing with the case of a well-set-up young man named George wrant, who pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to a charge of being an idlo and disorderly person. Acting-Detective MoLcllan said that accused, who waa arrested on Thursday evening, had not been known to work for some years. Tho detective described the accused as a racecourse spieler, who had no means of support, and witness considered him to be a menace to the. community. Accused eaid that as a result of his being fined last week for assault, his finances had been depleted, and he was now looking for work. His Worship : Explain what work you have been doing. Grant informed the Court that he had been working for a man named •lames, at Dunedin. selling various articles on a percentage basis. He had left that employment at the beginning of last month. Chief-Detective Kemp : Did James have rooms?— Yes. Where were they situated?—l forget the name of the street. You only know it was in Dunedin?— What was your employer's Christian name?— Harry. I know the street, but I can't think of the name. It was right np the top end of George Street. His Worship was not satisfied with nccused'a story, and sentenced him to three months' imprisonment. "Wellington does not want your class of man," the magistrate added.
