PORTABLE SCHOOLS.
SUCCESSFUL INNOVATION.

The portable buildings designed by the department, to which reference was made last year, have now been elected in several t:entres and give general satisfaction both Vo the •teachers and to the local school authorities, states the annual report of the Education Department* In a time of financial stress they have enabled th* department to avoid "the immediate comt of expensive permanent additions to schools, and, as they can be erected beside existing buildings, they have also enabled the department to postpone for the time being the erection of schools on new sites, in connection with which would be involved | considerable expense for work on the site, fencing, outbuildings, etc. Apart from their recognised utility in connection with primary schools, these buildings, which aro constructed in sections, can be widely used in connection with secondary schools, technical schools, etc., for workshops, laboratories, and so on. The portable building can be oxtended indefinitely or subdivided ac comparatively small cost. Then, if it hae to be taken to pieces to provide a new building, the sections can be again used without waste of material. Such a building may be regarded as providing what educationists and school architects ar«s aiming at —a building whose utility life is viqual to its structural life, «
