KAURI GUM PURCHASE.
CURTAILMENT NECESSARY. ACCUMULATION OF STOCKS. [BY TELECRAT-H.—SPECIAL RBFOBTER.] WELLINGTON. W«dne*d*y. A rumour that the gum purchasing operations in the far north by the Gov. ernment has ceased waß mentioned, in the House to-day bv Mr. V. H. Seed (Bay of Islands). Mr. Reed said it was reported that diggers had an accumulation of gum. and being hard pressed for cash the position was becoming serious. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister for Lands, said that whilo he had not all the information at hand he could say that the (department bad not ceased purchasing gum. They had, however, been compelled to curtail their operations and deal only with the most pressing cases, aa owing to tho state of the market they had too much gum on hand. Mr. Guthrie added that this month the department would have about £4000 available for the purchase of gum.
