STATIONERY FOR SCHOOLS.

POSITION OF HEADMASTERS.

PROPER STORAGE WANTED.

Matters in connection with the supply of stationery to school children were brought before the Education Board yesterday by a deputation from the Headmasters' Association.

Mr. A. J. C. Hall, president of the association, said several resolutions on the matter had been passed by the association. In the first place it was desired that the supply of stationery be an annual one, so that the headmasters could receive the whole supply at one time. Then it was necessary to have ample and secure storage in each school, and he suggested cupboards with patent locks. The association further asked that headmasters be not held responsible for loss caused through fire or burglaries; that responsibility for the stationery be not accepted until storage was provided; that remission of money from the headmasters to the board be made monthly or threemonthly; and that, on a headmaster leaving a school, the responsibility remain for the meantime with the chairman of the school committee or with the first assistant.

Mr. W. H. Newton said the headmasters had a real desire to help the board ?ud lo assist parents who had been hit by the high cost of stationery, a great deal'of which was of poor quality. Tho paper was so poor that the children could not write properly on it, while the slate pencils were abominable. He asked that tho supplementary readers be included in the scheme. A recent consignment of these imported from England had cost 373, whereas if the same books had l.ecn bought locally they, would have cost £4.. The chairman, Mr. B. C. Banks, said he thought the proposals viere vcrv sensible. They were referred to the "Stationery Committee.
