COMMUNITY SINGING.
KING'S THEATRE GATHERING.
LAST FOR PRESENT SEASON.
Newton's final community sing-song, yesterday, was without question the most successful of the season, every se- ' &i King's Theatre being occupied!, vr; : A. crowds blocking the entrance to stalls and gallery. The singing, under the leadership of the Rev. Jasper Calder, \?ru very hearty, the concluding items, "Till We Meet Again" and the ever-popular hymn, "Lead, Kindly Light," being given with fine expression. Tho chair-
man, Mr. M. J. Bennett, in referring to the many happy hours spent by Newtou people in community singing, asked for the same support and enthusiasm, for next season's gatherings. Great interest was caused bv his announcement that young Master Denver Calder, the son of Ihe popular 3ong leader (who was accommodated with standing space on the chairman's table), would take a hand in the conducting of next season's initial sing-song. A suggestion had also been mjide that Sunday evening community singing gatherings should also bo held, but this would be a matter for further consideration for the executive. Reference was made to the fact that one old gentleman had attended every Newton singsong this season, having always secured a seat in the front row, and by way of a slight recognition of thic; enthusiasm the speaker desired to present him with the committee badge he himself was wear ing. The presentation was made amid loud applause. In conclusion, the chairman thanked the song-leaders, Mrs. "Williams, accompanist, ana all others who had so successfully established community sing' ing in Newton. The gathering was brought to a close with cheers for leader and accompanist, and the singing of "Auld Land Syne."
