SYDNEY HOTEL-FIRE.
ACCIDENT TO LADDER. FIREMAN LOSES LIFE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 12.45 a.m.) SYDNBY, Aug. 27. A fire, accompanied -with loss of life, occurred to-night in Adams' Hotel, which extends from Pitt Street to George Street- The fire started in the fourth floor, which, together with the third and fifth floors, was burnt out. The firemen were using a Simons extension ladder 85ft. long, worked from its own base by electricity, when the top portion from some unknown cause suddenly swung out and Fireman Brown, "who was 60ft». up, fell to the roof of a lower building and thence to the ground and was killed. Leanard Chappell fell 40ft. and is in a precarious condition. A third fireman, named Dwyer, was slightly injured. The damage by the fire is very heavy. A large number of inmates had to make a hurried exit from the hotel and lost most of their belongings.
