July 2JL Tha New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Remuera, Which left Southampton yesterday for New Zealand with 644 passengers and 166 crew on board, collided with the Ellennan- Wilson liner Marengo, 60 miles off Portland Bill, at 12.25 sun.. - to-day. The Remuera limped into Portland in a crippled condition, and her passengers were ianded. A dense fog prevailed when the ships 1 . collided. The Jtemuera's passengers were in bed at the time. Plymouth and Salcombe lifeboats were also launched, but after a six hours' » search they failed to locate the liner. When the liner reached Portland Harbour she was down by the bows and had a, heavy list to starboard. Another is Mrs. HB-.s, a Isdv of 76, who was recently received bv Queen Mary on making her first visit to this coimtrv for 60 years. There is also a five-year-old boy travelling alone to the Anlinodfis. The first saloon passengers arc to leavo to-morrow bv the Ormuz. The second &H saloon passengers will come up to London, and provision for their accommodation will be made for them by the shipping company. It is hoped that they ■will be able to get away bv tho Panaroa ft. ; on Aueust 11. Accommodation will be provided for the third-class passengers at Eastleigh until surti time as they can be sent on by the Panaroa, the Couinthid ,; Y and other outward-bound vessels.
