-—I «»» THEFT OF A SUIT. TWO MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. A charge of stealing a suit of clothes, valued at £3 19s 6d, the property of Alfred Moore, was preferred against Thos. Lanning Marchbank, in the Police Court, yesterday, hefore Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. Accused made a statement when he was arrested, in- which he said he had taken some whisky for his cold. While he was under the influence of drink, he had a faint recollection of taking a suit of clothes from a shop in Karangahape Bead. The magistrate said he could cot extend accused's present term of probation. He had a had record, and he was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. WOMAN PUT ON PROBATION, A young married woman, 20 years of age, was charged with the theft of £1. Mr. Moody, who appeared for accused, said she had been out of work, and had opened a postal packet addressed to her mother, and taken the money from it. The money had been used to buy food for accused's baby. Chief-Detective Mcllveney said the trouble was that until the case was cleared up, snspicion was liable to rest on the Postal Department officials. Accused was admitted to probation for two;' years. PUNISHMENT FOR THEFT. The young woman, Alice Swanston (Mr. Moody), appeared for sentence on the charge of stealing} two £1 notes. Accused, who nad no previous convictions, was convicted and ordered to come up for senteuce an 12 months, and to pay costs. MISCELLANEOUS OFFENCES. A charge of having constructed a nonfireproof ceiling in a concrete building, was made against C. Young, who was ordered to pay costs. For failing to keep a proper wages and time book, J. Polglase was fined 40s. He was ordered to pay costs on a charge of failing to notijiy an extension of time worked. Quang Kee was fined £2 and 9s costo for ill-treating a horse by working it with a sore shoulder. For having unregistered dogs in their possession, C. Hayson and W. Hayson were each fined 20s and 7s costs. Thos. Purchas was fined 10s and 9s costs for having an unregistered firearm in his possession.
