TE AROHA DISTRICT.

~«. THAMES HARBOUR BILL. OPPOSITION EXPRESSED. [by tklbobaph.—own correspondent.] TE ABOHA. Friday. At a meeting oi: the Chamber of Commerce the Thames Harbour Board's Amendment Bill, at present before the House of Representatives, was discussed at some length, and finally it was decided to notify Sir William Berries that the chamber objects to the Bill on the score of allocation. It was also resolved to advise other public and local bodies in the Te Aroha, Moerinsville, and Matamata districts of the chamber's objection; and seek their support. It was stated that there is little' prospect at this late stage of obstructing the passage of the Bill, but that opposition should be organised to secure an adverse result at the polls later on. The president and Mr. T. Stanley, both old residents of the Thames, were strongly convinced that a satisfactory harbour cannot be made at Thames, and that exepnditure in this connection would be so much money thrown away. Another matter that received attention at the Chamber of Commerce meeting was the Public Works Department's improvement works in the Waihou River, the opinion being expressed that there is a grave danger that cargo traffic on the river will have to cease unless several sandbars between, Paeroa and Te Aroha are removed before the summer, when the river will be lower than now, Efforts are to be made to arrange a conference of local bodies' delegates from the Tauranga and! Te Aroha districts with a view to having Thompson's Track, which provides a splendid grade and shorter route between the two districts, made a motor road. It was stated at the Chamber of Commerce meeting that the postal authorities favour this route for the conveyance of mails from the western Bay of Plenty to Waikato and Auckland, until such time as the Waihi-Tauranga railway is an accomplished fact. Sir William Herri es is expected in Te Aroha next month, and his help is to be enlisted. There promises to be a keen contest for the three vacancies on the Te Aroha Jockey Club Committee. Th© three retiring members, Messrs. R. Burke, jun., K. J. R. Nicol, and S. L. Boles are opSosed by Messrs. W. H. Long and W. R. ohnson. The president, Mr. R. L. Scmers, and three vice-presidents, Messrs. J. B. Johnson, R. B. Hine3, and P. Baines, were re-elected unopposed.
