DEFEAT OF AUCKLAND.

WIN FOR SOUTH CANTERBURY. [BY. TELEGRAPH—PRESB ASSOCIATION.] TIMARTJ. Wednesday. The Auckland footballers opened the South Island itinerary hero by\ opposing South Canterbury in dull, though fino •weather, and on dry. faist turf. The game opened fast and even, the forws.rds having most of the play. Maison had to retire after 15 minutes. McManus iiubstituting him. The first si>oll was a long, fast battle for supremacy, tho local forwards outplaying their opponents, but meeting smart, fast, clever backs. The first score came to Auckland before the game* had been going 20 minutes as the result of a splendidly combined run by McManus. Earl and Thomas, who got over, but Ifwersan failed with, the kick. The .northern forwards lacked sting, while tackling of South Canterbury kept attack out of danger. Balf time saw the scoiob unchanged. The game in the second ,spell was extremely willing, with few outstanding incidents. The local forwards continued io dominate the play. Ward crossing aud converting five minute* after the restart. The Auckland backs were once more seen to. advantage with smart picking up and. tricky running, but given little opportunity of combination. with South Canterbury forwards always harassing the opponents' defence. Ward again crossed, but failed with the kick. Auckland livened up from thin reverse, and for the first time the forwards had the upper hand, but the jiace seemed to be too much for them, and a promise of brighter things faded out with a determined attack by South Canterbury. A free kick close in looked dangerous for South Canterbury, and Ifwerson kicked a goal. The game until the finish was a stirring, determined struggle, with good football. South Canterbury winning by 8 points to 6. The victory was attributable to the superiority of the local forwards, who w«ire - faster and lasted better. The Auckland backs were smart and clever, but were smothered by overweight and smart, tackling of the home side. SOUTHLAND V. HAWKE'S BAY. [BY TBLSaBAPH.—PJaEBS ASSOCIATION.} INVERCAKGILL. Wednesday.
