WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM.

♦ DESIGNS FOR COMPETITION. JUDGING NEXT MONTH. Matters relating to Auckland's War Memorial Museum were briefly discussed yesterday by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson. All the designs entered for competition have not yet been received, but the Mayor said his previous forecast of 75 should about represent the number that would go to the jury of award. The question of suitable accommodation for displaying the designs for judging purposes arid other matters relating to the competition would come before the citizens' committee next week. It was probable, added Mr. Gunson, that the judging would take place either daring the first or second week in September. The judging was expected to occupy a fortnight, so that the award of the jury should be known before the end of September. As instancing the widespread interest that was being manifested in the competition, Mr. Gunson said inquiries already had been received from( Africa regarding the result. Referring to the matter of financing the museum, the Mayor said a balance of about £80,000 was required to reach the total amount fixed as -the objective of the fund. Tr.e question of arranging for an appeal to the public would be considered by the citizens' committee next week. The appeal had long been expected, and in due course would be commended to the public, for a generous response.
