CURRANTS AND RAISINS
THE QUESTTON OF DUTY. [bx telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. "I understand," stated tho Minister for Customs, Hon. W. Downie Stewart, to-day, •' that merchants are embarrassed in placing their season's orders for currants and raisins owing to the uncertainty as, to whether the suspended duty against foreign countries is to bo brought into operation so as to help Australia. In order to meet this difficulty I have • cabled to the Minister for Customs in Australia notifying him that if as the result of negotiations the duty is imposed on foreign currants and raisinG it can only operate from next January. This should enable merchants to know where thoy are, as I understand orders now placed are usually delivered not later than November."
