TRESPASSERS AT NIGHT.

SCHOOL SHELTER SHEDS. I POLICE ACTION ÜB&ED. Means of preventing the use of school shelter sheds at night by trespassers of the vagabond type, were discussed by the Education Board yesterday. The School Committees' Association forwarded a resolution asking the board to erect gates, or doors, to shelter sheds at schools where required, hut several members were of opinion that this would be putting the board to unnecessary expense. One member said the matter had been mentioned to the police, but they had suggested th&fc if a Queen Street shopowner went off anti left his shop unlocked, he could hardly expect the police to keep guard for him. The same thing applied to the- open shelter sheds in school grounds adjoining the public thoroughfare. The chairman, of the board, Mr. E. C. Banks, did not share this view. " There is no reason why a policeman should not have a look around a shelter sfced with an electrio torch once or twice a week," he said, " just as he is required to keep an eye on streets and public places generally. If it were known that a policeman was in the habit of dropping in now. and again, it woald have* a deterrent effect on the people who make use of the sleds." Other members of the lioard favoured strong doors with padlocks,;Mr, H. S. W; King stating tnat experience with prowlers in the Deionport Domain had taught him that nothing else would keen them out. The. low wire netting barrier and the barb wire entanglements suggested by othtr members would be of no .use whatever, be declar««"y for thttse prowlers would jump over anything and " doss " in the sheds for the night. If bolts and bars were not piracttcable, the only other alternative was for the police tojro in with a light and iroufc them out The matter was referred: to the architect for a report as to cost of doors or gates to shelter sheds.
