MOUNT ROSKILL DRAINAGE.
LOAN *OF £60,1HH! MOOTED. IMPROVED WATER SUPPLY. The proposal for the drainage of the Mount Roskill district was advanced a further stage on Tuesday evening, when the Road Board decided to ask the ratepayers to sanction a loan for the purpose. The chairman, Mr. S.'/E, Tansley, expressed the opinion that the ratepayers should be asked for . a slohn of, ■ say, £60.000 for three important ■ improvements : Drainage, £42,C00; enlargement of water mains in the present water area and extension of thV?'water supply to the Islington and other estates, £16,000; and paying off the present overdraft in the water account, £2000. Mr; H. Luke said £12,000 would be required to cover the cost of putting down larger mains in the present area. The work was absolutely essential both for domestic supply and in case of fire. In some streets residents were supplied with water through • a one-inch pipe. That, of course, would be quite inadequate when the drainage was installed. Other members agreed that' the dig* trict should adopt the modern sanitary system,, plans for which had been prepared by Mr. Lockjo Gannon. The improvements were absolutely essential in view of the increase in population. The chairman 'mentioned that it would not be necessary for the current year's rates to be paid before ratepayers could vote at the poll, which would be taken about two months hence. It was decided to obtain tho sanction of the Minister for Finance to raise a loan and then push on the matter so that residents on the Islington Estate may be supplied with water next summer if possible.
