CENTENARY OF BRAZIL,
EXHIBITION NEXT MONTH.
BEITISH PARTICIPATION.
The centenary of the independence of Brazil will be celebrated this year by an exhibition in Bio do Janeiro, which will be opened on September 7 and continued until March 31. Originally a Portuguese settlement, thejjountry provided a haven for the Royal Family when it fled from Portugal on the French invasion in 1807, and eight years later the colony was declared a kingdom. The Portuguese Court having returned to Europe in 1821, the independence of the country was proclaimed on September 7, 1882.' In 1889 Brazil was declared a republic. Britain will be represented at the exhibition by representative exhibits housed in a special pavilion, of which the central portion, of permanent construction, is to be presented to the people of Brazil at the close of: the exhibition. It has also been announced that the Government has decided to send the battle-cruisers Hood and Repulse to Rio de Janeiro during the period of the exhibition.
