FARMERS' UNION AFFAIRS.
ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.
RENEWED OPERATIONS URGED. The provincial executive of the Farmers' Union met bst evening, the chairman, Mr. R. D. Duxfield, presiding. A remit from the Morrinsville branch, that the Government be urged to bring the Advances Department up-to-date and borrow a large sum of money to lend to farmers through the Advances to bettlers Department, was discussed. Mr. C. C. Munro said the executive should support the remit, as jt was the only method of keeping interest within reasonable limits. The remit was adopted. ■ A letter was received from tho (southland Union stating that it was intended to present a petition to Parliament requesting that legislation be passed with a view to having tho farming industry exempt from the operation of tho Arbitration Act. - • • . It was decided to support the petition, which was signed by the members of the executive = . A remit was received from the lanuna branch urging that the allowance made to school children who travelled three miles or more to school in vehicles be extended to children who travelled that distance on foot or horseback. It was stated that the request had been supported by the Teachers' Institute. Several speakers supported the remit, which was carried. A suggestion was received from the Northern Wairoa sub-provincial executive that branches of the union in the various districts be requested to appoint committees to advise newcomers to their district on local matters. It was decided to circularise the branches advising them to appoint committees as suggested.
