FIRE LOSSES IN CITIES.

FOUR CENTRES COMPARED. The superintendent of the Wellington Fire Brigade submitted a schedule to tho Wellington City Council last week setting out tho estimated losses through fires iu the principal cities of the Dominion, together with a comparison of the losses for the years 1903-08 with the period 1917-22 in tlie city of Wellington. Tho figures were as follow:— 1917-18— Auckland, £18.118; Christchurch, £9823; Wellington, £14,562; Dnnodin, £51,799. 1918-19. —Auckland, £45.849; Christdliurch, £27,433; Wellington, £14,412; Dunedin, £9121.

1919-20.—Auckland, £39,691; Christ-chui/.-h, £19.306; Wellington, 35,201; Dunedin, £7636. 1920-21.—Auckland, £113,885; Christchurch, £92,692; Wellington, £59,848; Dunedin, £39,150. 1921-22. —Auckland, £24,776; Christchurch, £10,933; Wellington, £36,600; Dunedin, £18,442. Totals.—Auckland, £242,319; Christchurch, £100,224; Wellington, £160,623; Dunedin, £126,147. , Tho fire losses in Wellington from 1903 to 1908 were £319,555, while from 1917 to 1922 they were only £160,623, notwithstanding the fact that in 1922 tho value of improvements was estimated at £14,447,415, as against only £6,915,802 in 1908. Tho above losses do not include wharves and shipping.
