HOUSE-BREAKERS AT WORK
ELDERLY WOMAN ASSAULTED. INCIDENTS AT MOUNT EDEN. Thieving is stated to be very prevalent in the Mount Eden district at present. An attempt to steal articles from a house in the vicinity of Dominion Road was made one evening last week. During the absence of several members of the household, an slderly woman remaining in the house was disturbed by a noise at one of the doors. Proceeding to the open doorway she was knocked to the floor, it is alleged, by a blow, and, in addition to Shock, recoived somewhat severe injuries to her face. The miscreant managed to make good his escape before an alarm could be raised. In another instance a man gained entrance t,o a house in the same district, and the occupants were disturbed by noises. As they were making investigations the intruder ra.n out from behind them and decamped. The articles stolen in the past few weeks have included a bicycle, a dressbasket and contents, and lady's wearing apparel, while, in one or two cases, money has been taken. Numbers of ca,se3 in which ,clothes lines have been stripped have been reported. The matter is engaging the attention of the police.
