[B¥ TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday. Fine weather favoured the Canterbury Jockey Club to-day for the clc«e of tho Grand National carnival.at Riccarton., Ihero waa a little rain over night, but it did not affect the which wna in good order. There was some groat sport. A field of nine contested the Longbeiich Hunters' Hurdle Race. The. Dunedin horse Mystico was mude favourite in a good betting race, with Horo We Are second choice. These two were in front a mile from home, and Mystico won with ridiculous ease. Kauwhero was close up third* with Agnola and Pallndium next. Mystico's form confirmed the view that he was unlucky to be beaten on Tuesday by Innisfallen, who on thi3 occasion cut up badly. Maeter Peter went well for a mile, but Ready fell. Whipcord and Nicomar were the popular fancies for the Ayleebury. Steeplechase. Nicomar was in front practically all the way, and be beat Staff Officer easily, with Whipcord a few lengths away and Malincourt fourth. Dick and Sartolme refused at the first fence and Indue fell at tho last, but oherwise the jumping was good. Nicemar's form wan an improvement on what he showed earlier in tho meeting. Whipcord did not go as well as was expected. Some Kid was installed favourite for the Heathcote Handicap, with Passionless and Forest Gold aleo well. backed. Economist, Counterstroke. and Listening Post led to the straight, where they retired. Forest Gold was in front a little further on. but failed to stall off a fresh challenge, and bad to put up with third place, Deucalion beating Verbosity in tlio last few strides. Haurangi and Some Kid wero close up. Deucalion is a solid customer, of whom the best has not yet been seen. Rowan and Kareao were the popular picks for the Sty* Hurdle Race. Strayshot made the pace, but the two favourite® joined her at the last hurdle. In the run home Rowan beat Kareao oomfortably, with Strayshot six lengths away. Nautical ran well for a mile and. a-qunrter, and "then faded out. Rowan is improving with bis racing, and he will win plenty of raoee yet. The Sydenham Hurdle Race attracted nino ittarters, Glodful and Oreoro being wnhdrawn. Poanui, Explorer, and Passenger ■were fancied in that order. Passenger and Explorer lod Fisher and Penury Rose in the oarly stages. Spook was rushed to the front at the mile-post, but. two furlong further on Passenger was again in front, lie opened out a good gap and never looked like losing, eventually winning ea he liked by two long-tlis from Goda Start, who finished last, and boat Penury Rose by two lengths, with Spook and Poanui next. Poanui was a disappointment, and. Explorer Tailed to stay. Falstaff settled his chance \>y a bad jump at the first hurdle. Passenger's win further enhanced the form of Rowan, who has won twice since he ran second to Passenger on the opening day. Oakleigh. Red Cent, and Waimai were backed in that order for the Lincoln Steeplechase. Golden Prinoe. Red Cent, Omahu, and Old Gold showed the way for more than half the distance. Waimai then moved up, and be jumped to the front at the first of the Kennels double, only to lose his rider at the next fence. Oakleigh was a long way back in the early stages, but over the last mile bo wa« found cutting Ilia opponents down in great style, • Red Cent led over tho last fence, but he wag beaten then, and Omahu took charge. Oakleigh finished faat under punishment, and many people thought lie had won, but the judge declared in favour of Omahu by balf a head. P Cent, wais fiix lengths away third, with Old Gold fourth. Oakleigh's performance was full of merit, while Omahu jumped really well. L'Amour was made favourite for the Redelifffl Handicap, in which he was giving away a lot of weight to some useful hacks. Hon?tinf) rushed to the front at tho end of two furlongs, and opened out a good gap from Lord Leslie, with Yankee Dan next. On reaching the straight Bluff and L'Amour moved up. L'Amour .finished on well for the distance, but Horatius beat him by over a length, Ya.nkoe Dan being a length "-way. witb Bluff and Sir Huon next. Lord Leslie ; fjuied out, and was one of the last to finish. Horatius is *- fine galloper who rarely con- ; descends to show hin speed 111 public. His , c-ffort to-day was full of merit. A field of 13 lined up for the Selwyn.Handicap, and backcrs piled tre mpney m on the aprintqrs. Royal Ma«, Chimera, and Will Oakland were the favourites. Wrangle and Will Oakland led for five furlongs,, and , thon Will Oakland retired to the tail of . the field. There was a great finish.
