BOXING.

AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPION SHIPS. NEW ZEALAND TEAM. The team selected to represent the Dominion at tho Australasian championships to.be held at Hobart on September iJG. comprises the winners of the feather-weight, light-weight, welter-weight, and middle-' weight championships at the New Zealand tournament on Monday evening:. Of these, three belong to Auckland, ana include C. Purdy. who last year won tho provincial. Dominion, and Australasian bantam title, and who has this year annexed tlie Auck--1 land Provincial, North Island, and New Zealand feather-weight championships. Purdy commenced his boxing career here last season when at tho age of 15 years, and to date he has won no fewer than 27 contests, including six championships—a worthv record for a lad of his years. P. Hansen, who won the welter-weight championship, only commenced boxing in Auckland this season, and is already a triple championship w.iuner. He has demonstrated skill of no mean order, being a very fast boxer with a heavy punch in either hand. He should be equal to keeping the best from the Australian States busy at Hobart next month. R. Meale has been boxing for four seasons, and he has been very successful, having twice been champion of New Zeahnd in his class.. once the Australasian middleweight champion, while this ye.'tr he added to his laurels the title of North Island champion, to say nothing of biu success as unbeaten Auckland provincial champion last year and again this year. D. McDonald, the other member of the team, is new to boxing, but he has . now won the Otago, South Island, and Dominion light-weight championships this season. It is not generally known that McDonald was in a sorry plight when he reached' Wellington last week on his way to Auckland for the New Zealand championships. It was feared he would not be able to continue the journey. A swellins on his right instep had to be surgically, treated, and this prevented him from doing any training after he reached Auckland. Consequently he was overweight on Monday, and had to undergo a courfee of treatment in tho Turkish baths during the afternoon, in order to make the right weight. In these circumstances his showing was very creditable. The New Zealand synateur boxing cham pionships. which were decided in the Town Hall, on Monday evening, were interesting in every way, and the very large audience that witnessed the different contests was. in most cases treated to exhibitions of boxing of a high standard. The tournamout passed off most, satisfactorily, the only incident to mar the proceedings being the demonstration by a. section of the audicnce a sain it the de-1

In the initial session McDonald forced the puce, and scored freely with either hand, while Blackburn g effort was of the spasmodic order, and he clinched frequently. McDonald won round by a good margin. The Bocond round saw Blackburn the aggressor, and he scored well, connecting well with both hands ij opponent's body and head. Mcif,? ?! fought back, but the honours were with the local lad when the gong sounded by a narrow margin. McDonald looked weary as ho came from his corner at the commencement of the third round, but he ppened the Bconnjf with a couple of stinging left leads to Blackburn's head, whicli found their mark. The latter fought back with determination and soon established a ?-i* i 8 to the head were heavy, while iie landed good punches with his right °Bi, , Donald a body with marked effect. Btili the Dunedin lad came back fcr more, nut his blows wore feeble by comparison with his earlier efforts. The round ended with Blackburn forcing the pace, but the honours of the engagement were fairly even. with the' points of the contest at this ttagc favouring the visitor. Tho final round was a triumph for Blackburn, who scored a considerable margin ot points ovor his opponent, who hung on for the greater part of the session to avoid a knock-out, which surely must iliave been registered against him had be been compelled to break clean. Blackburn had him in difficulty early in the Tound, and continued to pound him with left and right blows to the head and body, thus metre than making up the points he was behind as a result of his feeble showing in the first encounter. Br his very fine finishing effort Blackburn pulled the contest out of the fire, and should have heen awarded the decision, although the marp-in of points in his favour wa.s not great. The demonstration against the verdict of the referee, however, was unworthy of, an Auckland audience, and it is to be hoped that in future the section responsible for it will accept any decisions given at local tournaments in a sporting > spirit.
