UNDER LEAGUE RULES. CITY DEFEATS DEVONPORT. ' % MARISTS 21, FIRE BRIGADE 21. PONSONBY AND RICHMOND WIN. The second round of the senior grade club competitions under League rules commenced on Saturday. Ciiy and Devonport met on No. 1 ground at Carlaw Park, tile former winning by* 9 points to 3. On No. 2 ground Ponsonby defeated Newton by 16 points to 5. Marist Old Boys and Fire Brigade fought out a drawn game at Victoria Park, and ißichmond scored their first win by defeating Athletic' by 8 points to 7. The conditions were all against good football, the grounds being sloppy owing to the, heavy rain which fell before play commenced. A fair number of spectators attended at Carlaw Park to witness the game on No. 1 ground, the Devonport supporters being present in force. The gate receipts amounted to £61 15s. CITY V. DEVONPORT.

The game between Ponsonby and Newton on ISo. 2 ground at Carlaw Park was a veritable mud scramble, the field beingi in a very sloppy condition. The initial advantage went to Ponsonby. Delgrosso landing a penalty goal soon after the kick-off. Newton quickly retaliated, a good passing bout by the backs ending in Annan scoring a try in a good position. Poison added the goal points, placing Newton 3 points ~ in the lead. After some give and take play the Ponsonby men got moving in a fine passing rush in which Walsh, Hing, Morman, and Hanlon took part, the last-men-tioned crossing the Newton line and scoring. Delgrosso failed to convert. A series of rushes by the Newton forward« threatened the Ponsonby line, but the greasy ball was hard to« handle and the onslaughts proved ineffective. Toward the end of the spell Ponsonby maintained a> determined attack on the Newton line, and McGregor scored a try just before half-time, the scores at the interval being: Ponsonby . . . . *• .. 8 Newton . . 5 Early in the second spell the Ponsonby forwards attacked, and Meadows, picking up in the loose, sent the ball to Black, who scored- Delgrosso failed in the kick at goal. Keeping up the pressure. Ponsonby again invaded the Newton Quarter. A penalty kick gave the defenders temporary relief, but the Ponsonby forwards again swept up tho field with the ball, and McNeil scored in a handy position. A. McGregor added the goal points. FIRE BRIGADE. The Marist Old Boys took tho field at Victoria Park with a weak team against Fire Brigade The first spell was all in favour of Fire Brigade, the forwards in particular infusing great dash into their work. The first score went to Fire Brigade. Lovett placing a goal from a ponalty kick. Shortly afterwards J. Woolley floored a try which was converted by Wareing. The Mariflt Old Boys then had a turn at attack, and the defenders being penalised near the lino, Ghent opened the Marists' scoring account with a goal. The Fire Brigade forwards, with a sweeping rush, invaded their opponents' territory, and Coatcs, picking up. dash"d over and Bcored. Wnreing failed with the shot at goal. The Piako Rugby Union is arranging for the Piako-Waihi match for the Poland Memorial Cup, to be played at Waihi on July B—one week earlier than originally intended, as the Auckland v. Thames Valley representative match is set down for decision on July 15 at Paeroa. There are prospects of a representative match, Thames Valley y. Waikato. taking l place on July '£2 at Hamilton, and also of the Piako and Paeroa representatives playing a match to decide which team should play the Thames representatives for the Peace Cup.
