Ih<> death occurred yesterday, •* tt residence, St, Stephen's Avenue, ParneU, of Mr. Seymour Thorns-George, who AM long been associated with the political life of the Dominion and the commercial interests of Auckland.. »",'.,.„■ The late Mr. Seymour Thome-treorge, who was born in 1851, was the son of Ldeut.-Colon«l Thorne-George* formerly of the 4th Hussars, who mm an old friend and companion in boyhood ot Hr Surge Grey. Mx. Thorne-George was educated at Cheltenham College, England, being intended to enter the army or the Royal Engineers. At the next general election he contested the Rodney seat and was elected, continuing to represent that; constituency in two Parhaments. He | served as one of the Liberal Whips, being for a time senior Whip f« tt /i«g; He once unsuccessfully contested ParneU electorate, and was Mayor of that borough for two terms. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1903 untaJ 1917- . .. Mr. Thorne-George was prominently identified with the raining industry; and also with the commercial progress o* the city. He was on the directorate of several comoanies at various times. For <5& years he had been a director oi the New Zealand Insurance Company, and for nine years of that period he was chairman of the board, holding this position from 1905 nnta 1908, and again from ISU. until 1917. He was one of the original shareholders in the Waihi Gold Mining Company and was a member of the directorate sitace the company was founded. ±16 was also, until lately, a director of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company. laeutenantrColonel George ThornsGeorge, Mr. Seymour Thome-lTeorge s father, was captain of the 75th Regiment during the Kaffir War in 1836, and. took part m the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. Helmore, the well-known Christchurch solicitor, who died in England on Wednesday, was president of tho | Canterbury Law Society. As a young; man Mr. Helmore earned much difltiiaction on the football field. He represented; Canterbury as halfback, and played against England (A. E. Stoddart'u team) | in 1888. He was a member of the New Zealand team which toured Now South Wales in 1884, and won every match it played. For many years he was captain of the North Canterbury Football Club, Rangiora, and on one occasion he captained Canterbury against Otago. As a cricketer he played for Canterbury against Wellington m 1884, against Otago, and New Bouth Wales in 1890, and against Otago in 1892. Mr. Helmore was a fellow of Christ's College at the time of his death, and was president of the' Christ's College Old Boys' Association m J 191 L He was married in 1893 to thoj daughter of the Hon. Ernest Gray. The deceased is survived by <his widow, one son, and two daughters. His younger son was killed in France. t i I i I j I I
