PAEROA AFFAIRS.

THE RIVERS DRAINAGE. [ET TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT, j PAEROA. Friday.

A meeting of the Thames Valley Reference Board was held in Paeroa yesterday, Mr. E. W. Porritt, presiding. A petition received from settlers 'whose farms are situated near the Puke Wharf at Paeroa stated that the floodgate at the outlet to the main outfall drain was put out of order owing to the obstructions in the drain, such obstructions being caused by deposits of silt. It was resolved that the board protest against the inadequate protection of the old startlers in the vicinity of the Wairoa and Ohinemuri Rivers, whose lands were previously free from floods in the course of a couple of days, but were now under water for a weok or more, and that the department be requested to provide for immediate protection, and that the petition be forwarded to the Minister and the district engineer. A letter was received from the general manager of the Northern Steamship Company asking that steps be taken to have the mouth of the Ohinemuri River leading to the company's wharf dredged, and that the shoals be removed. The company has been asked by the Public Works Department to move down to the Public Works Department's Wharf. The letter pointed out that if the company moved as requested it would compel consignees of goods to pay wharfage amounting to between £750 and £1000 a year. The meeting decided to strongly protest against the removal of the head 01navigation further from Paeroa, and request that the present channel leading to the present wharf be dredged and Sept open. Mr. Buchanan brought up the question of restoring the navigation to Paeroa. He stated that the 1910 commission had recommended that the navigation be restored, and up to the present nothing had been done to restore navigation to its previous state. It was resolved that the Public Works Department be urged to carry out the original scheme, and also to have the shoals now forming between Wharepoa and Paeroa removed.
