LATE HON. HUIA ONSLOW.

NATIVE OF NEW ZEAIAND. The Hon. Huia Onflow, brother of the present Earl of Onslow, whoso death at the early age of 32 years was recorded yesterday, was a native of Wellington, being the second son of the la*t Earl, who was Governor of New Zealand from 1889 to 1892. The choice of the naroo Huia by Lord and Lady Onslow for their son was accepted as a great compliment by the Ngatihuia tribe. After the christening' the infant was presented to the tribe, and the hereditary young chief ' of Ngatihuia was permitted to give the Maori salute of nose-rubbing to trie littie child. The young child was elected a rangatira, or chieftain, at Otaki. The Hon. Euia Onslow accompanied the Countess of Onslow and his sister when / they revisited New Zealand nearly 20 years ago, and upon that occasion they received the warmest of welcomes from the Ngatihuia tribe. Some time afterwards the Hon. Huia, when diving in France, struck hiis head on a rock. This caused serious injury to the spine, and for years he had bean bedridden. When he was brought back to England after the diving accident his father, although very ill at the time, in- t going to see his son. That unfortunate visit resulted in the death of Earl Onslow, who died in the house fi which his son was residing. The well-known Auckland schooner Huia, built in Kaipara in 1894, and now trading between this port ard Australia, was named after the Hon. Huia, and as a ; figure-head the vessel has a beautifully - carved and gilded representation of a huia bird. Formerly the Huia was owned by Sir Edwin Mitchelson, who was Mayor of Auckland when the Countess of Onslow, accompanied by her son and daughter, revisited New Zealand.
