The ■ i door of the cart entrance v,&s left open : i for a time during the evening. The cash I boxes were put»in the safe, which was I locked and the key placed in a book "n j a drawer- All the employees left about 1 10 p.m., the premises being securely ' j locked up. Next morning, though the ' i doors were apparently securely fastened, ' j it was found that the premises had been ! entered and the cash twxes rifled. They ' jwere found en a table, having been prized ' j open apparently with a blunt instrument. ' j A total of £47 18s 9d in cash and tram 1 ! tickets valued at £5 l£s were missing. j Accused had previously been employed by the firm. ! ! Constable Doyle, of Te Awamutu, said 1 lie arrested, accused on amother charge on ■June 12. On searching accused's room ' he found the tickets produced. Accused < said they had been given to him by 3 ■ mate but refused to say where he could ' be found. ! Detective McHueh produced a state- " merit by accused admitting the <. :Tence. " Accused* baid that he entered the premises through the cart entrance, the door of ■ which was open, about 7.30 p.m. He I took some tram tickets from an office. ' After the employees left the buildinc he ' went up in the lift to the main office. i He found the key of the safe, opened ■ it, and took some money from the cash * boxes. He also obtained tram tickets in the upper office. He did not know-how 5 much money he took. He was about to ' leave the premises by the main doov but 1 saw a constable standing outside, so he 1 went back and left by the cart entrance 1 door. He had spent" the money mostly I in drink. * Accused pleaded guilty and was cam- -' mitted for sentence to the Supreme Court at Hamilton, where, 'it was stated, he had already been committed for sentence j apd trial on qther charges.
