MANUKAU ROAD WIDENING.
COMMENCEMENT OF WORK. TRAM TRACKS QUESTION. Matters in connection with the widening of Manukau Road were discussed by the City Council lest evening. The city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, gave details of tie arrangements made with all the lessees of the Dilworth Trust Board in Manukau RoadThe Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, mii that, in furtherance of the gift, of Jb>railway land, the matter of the • ligament had been settled and the Wotts ' Committee was now in a position to go on ] taking down the fence. Work on the Dilworth Trust sections had already start>d, I and he hoped that in three months the j alignment would be back to its new position. The Mayor also said it was recommended that the Newmarket. Borough Council, in reply to its request, be ad- | vised that the council does not propose ' j to chance the position of the tracks with- ' in the boundary of the borough, but I should the Borough Council desire it, the alteration may be carried out at its exI pense. at an estimated cost of £2500 foT , j the tracks between the Remuera junction j and Newmarket boundary. lie acting-manager of tramways, Mr. j A. E- reported that if the tracks ' j were put in a central position between , | Remuera junction and the Newmarket f ; boundary, opposite the public school, a distance* of approximately 220 yds,, it would necessitate an unsightly and incon--5 venient reverse curve being placed near - the Remuera junction. Such a reverse v curve might not meet with tie approval of j the Public Works Department or the Newmarket Council. The track foundation ber tween the Remuera junction and the New- " market boundary had been reconstructed • recently, therefore, it was no advantac;. to t the tramway department to have these tracks interfered with at the present time. Consequently, should tie XewmarI ket Council desire an alteration they should be required to pay for it. Regarding the remainder of tho road to be widened, that is from the Newmarket boundary to tbe Great, South Road, a satisfactory arrangement had alreadv been come to with the city engineer. Until a . new policy had been settled regarding . the requirements of Newmarket, ihe plans 1 could not be forwarded to the Public f Works Department for" approval. The reports were adopted.
