COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. SOMERVELL AND ST. LUKE'S DRAW. The third series of matches for the Auckland Hockey Association's championship were jUaycd at the Remuora grounds on Saturday in the presence of a good number of spectators. The principal event was the match between last year's champions, St. Luke's and Somervell. The game proved fast and exciting, and ended with a closely-contested draw of two goals each. Of the other senior matches, Mount Eden defeated Areta hy 4 goals to 1, while University A beat University B by 7 goals to 0. SOMERVELL V. ST. LUKE'S. Play was in the hands of Somervell for the first few minutes, till Rowo saved the situation, and the ball was carried,on to tho Somervell twenty-five, A long hit up the length of the field was returned by the Somervell goalkeeper, Cooper, who, however, was penalised for a high stick. He Rtopped tho shot, and play continued until ii, pass from Rich to A. Williams enabled the latter to mako tho first score for. St. Luke's. Somorvcll then conducted a vigorous counter-attack, which brought St. Luko'H goalkeeper. Menzies. into playMcLcod and Hookham tried to carry tho ball up field, but Somervell pressed hard, and closo work in St. Luke's circle ended in C. Wattß scoring. Operations remained in tho centre of the field until a rush by the Somervell forwards was stayed by Menzios kicking to tho line. After further give and take in St. Luke's territory, Somervell found themselves on tho defence. A hit across the circle by McLeod, was followed by a quick succession of shots by A. Potter. They were twice parried by Cooper, the last striking tho post. Somervell again noared the opposing toam's circle, but tho efforts of C. Watts to score failed. St. Luke's were given but slight relief before Somervell again camo in a position to score. A shot was stopped by Menzies. Another attack by Somervell gave C. Watts a shot, which wont high. St. Luke's shortly after assumed tho offensive, and, following a corner at tho Somervell end. McLeod hit into the circle, where A. Williams shot homo through tho goalkeeper's defence. This score was followed by another attack by Somervell, which was rendered harmless by tho half-time whistle. St. Luke's, 2; Somervell, 1. An invasion of St. Luko's territory commenced on resumption of play. A stiff encounter was stopped by Steele, who, howover, produced,a corner. It was touch, and go for some minutes, until McLeod relieved matters, when St. Luko's rushed forward, a good shot being stopped by Cooper. Some smart work by the Somervell forwards brought a combined rush within the opposite circle, where St. Luke's suffered sorao corners. A fast shot by C. Watts went slightly wide. Tho pace of the game grew faster, and the struggle alternated frequently from ono circle to the other. St. Luke's showed good form in attacking, until a fine dash forward by their opponents ended in an exciting score by C. Watts, who thus ovened up the points within a few minutes of the. conclusion of the game. ! St. Luke's pushed forward after the bully, j but timo was called just as Roberts hit out at St. Luke's twenty-five. Somervell 2 St. Luke's 2 Mr. L. C. Kent was referee. MOUNT EDEN V. ARETA. Mount Eden took tho initiative until A. Alexander was stooped at the circle by Von Sturmcr, Areta thereupon advancing : to the Mount Eden goal-line. A penalty gave Areta a chance, but Mount Eden repulsed the • attack, and their forwards pressed into Areta territory, the ball crossing the goal-line. Tho defenders gained slight relief, but another rush headed by Alexandor came to the circle, io be stopped by England and Von Sturmcr. I>lay wavered from side to side, finally resulting in a goal for Mount Eden scored by D. Alexander from a scramble. Areta opened an attack which was stayed by Johns, and Mount Eden, reaching the opposite circle, scored again through Watson. Two further attacks were made by Mount Eden. Watson again succeeding in scoring twice. Areta repeatedly attempted to reach Mount Eden's circle, but all efforts to shoot to the goal were frustrated. Mount Eden, 4; Areta, 0. Play moved slowly after resuming, but Thompson, cm the Mount Eden left, reached tho circle and passed to Watson, who was stopped by England. A temporary reverse was followed by another rush. A. Alexander sending in a shot, which, was stopped by the Areta. goalkeeper, Ellison. Areta then gained possession, and in tho attack that followed Nicholson scored Areta's only goal. Play in mid-field ensued, Areta finally , reaching the. opposing side's circle, from which Brown cleared by a long hit. Mount Eden reached Areta's twenty-five, but a free hit gave relief. Uneventful play gave way to a fine attack, put under way by the Aret* left wing, and a shot only just missed. Mount Eden rallied, but were turned back by Von Stunner. Shortly, before the game ended Areta narrowly missed a score. The final scores were: Mount Eden < Areta 1 Mr. T. H. Hodgson w»i referee. UNIVERSITY A V. UNIVERSITY B.

University A took the lead from the beginning. The opposing forwards lost chances by offside play, and the seniors reached tho circle. Several, shots missed, until Burton, sending to Grice, enabled the latter to score with a backhand stroke. University B attacked after the bully, but the seniors again came through, and a tussle in tho circle ended with Grice scoring again: University A, 2; University B, 0. The A's maintained their advantage in .the second half. Grice again found an opening, and Garrard and Can each scored with their shots. Grico was given a third opportunity, and after several shots had been parried by Stein, found the net. Third Grade.—Devonport Congregational, 6 goals, beat Mount Eden. 3; Stanley, 5 goals (Rule, Chaplin, Taylor, Miller, Saunders), beat University, 1 (Smith). Fourth Grade—Mount Eden won from Training College by default Filth Grade—Somervell. 8 goals (A. Mcpherson. Duncan, Savage), drew with Epiphany, 3 (White 2, Allen). LADIES' MATCHES.
