£400 DAMAGES FOR GIRL.
Is a man justified in refusing to marry a girl after the banns have been published because of his parent's objections to the match? A King's Bench jury recently answered the question in the negative, |aivd aNvarded £400 damages fbr breach of promise of marriage. •
Miss Ethel Ada White, 20, of Kitchener ißoad, Forest Gate, E.. the daughter of an electrical engineer, was the plaintiff; Mr. Walter G. J. Beaumont, 23, son of a barge-owner, of Earlham. Grove. Forest Gate, tho defendant.
In the witness-box Miss White said the engagement was entered into earlv last year. The marriage was fixed for December 29 and the banns were pirt up, but were cancelled by tho defendant two days before that date.
Mr. Beaumont, the defendant, who admitted the promise, gave evidence denying some allegations made by the plaintiff, and said he was justified in refusing to marry her. His parents had been opposed to the marriage.
It was agreed -by the parties to accept a verdict of a majority of the jury, which was in favour of Miss White, with £400 damages. Judgment was en'tevec. 1 accordingly, with costs. A stay of execution was granted.
