Chief interest centred in the matches at Carlaw Park, where there was an attendance of about 5000. the gat* receipts being £140, compared with £160 on tho previous Satur-t,a-v - vr 1 Newton and Athletics met on No. 1 ground, Newton winning a fast and exciting game by 20 points to 16. On the No. 2 ground, Marist Old Buys defeated Ponsonby by- 14 points to 6. Richmond and Cit.v played at Richmond, the latter winning' by 22 points to 5, The game between Devonport and Firo Brigade was strenuously contested at North Shore, the Devonport team scoring a victory by 18 points to 7. Shortly after the game started, Devonport wore awarded a free kick and Hand, with a fino effort from nearly halfway, landed a goal. Good passing by the * ire Brigade players carried tho ball to thoir opponents quarters, whero an infringement took place, and from a penalty kick Wareing placed a goal to the credit, of Firo Brigade, making the scores equal. Tho Firo Brigade players maintained the attack, but were driven back, and from a scrum Wheeler, for Devonport, secured the ball and scored. Hand converted with a fine kick. Give-and-tako play followed with Firo Brigade getting the better of the exchanges, but they were unable to pierce the dofenco until Ripley intercepted a pass and dashed over to score. Rukutai, of Auckland, arrived here to-day in connection with the assembling of a Maori League football team, to proceed to Australia. Ho has visited /Levin, Hawke's Bay, Poverty Bay, Opotiki and Whakatane, and has interviewed numerous prominent footballers. It ie anticipated that a lirst-clas« Maori team will bo got together and they will combine .weight with speed. The team is to assemble in Auckland toward the end of next week, and will immediately go into training. The combination will probably inclnde eight or nine players from tho Bay of Plenty. The team is likely to leave Auckland on May 24, and will be in Australia for about two months.
