COUNCIL BY-ELECTION.
"PROGRESSIVES" SUCCESSFUL APATHETIC ELECTORS. ABOUT 6500 OUT OF 35,916 VOTE. The by-election held yesterday to fill two vacancies on the Auckland City Council, caused by the deaths of two members, resulted in t'he return of Mr. A. E. Lawry and Mr. S. I. Crookes, the nominees of the Progressive Citizens' Election Committee, each with a majority of over 1000 votes over the Labour representatives, Messrs. R. F. Barter and Mr. E. <L Phelan. The results are; — A. E. Lawry .. .. 3,286 S. I. Crookes ~ ~ 3,246 E. J Phelan .. .. 2,245 R. F. Barter .. .. 2,075 Tho returns from the 25 polling places were rendered in record time. The first return was taken at the Town Hall office at 7.15 p.m., and by eight o'clock all the results were taken and the totals completed. As far as can be estimated about 5500 of the 35,916 electors on the roll voted. An analysis of the returns shows that in most polling places the electors voted either for the pair representing the Progressive Party, or tho Labour Party. At tho Epsom Library Messrs. Lawry and Crookes polled 106 and 102 votes respectively, and Messrs. Phelan and Barter 20 and 19 votes respectively. At St. Stephen's Avenue the figures showed the i same indications, and at Bayfield the , " progressives" each gained over 130 votes, while the two Labour candidates polled only 25 between them. At ; Remuera and Khyber Pass a similar state of affairs prevailed, while at the Chamber of Commerce each of the " progressives " obtained about 520 votes, while the othei 1 ' candidates each polled less than 100. At St. James' Hall, however, each of tho Labour candidates secured about 250 > votes, and the " progressives " each about ' 85 votes. At St. Benedict's Hall and : ' Queen's Wharf the Labour representatives ' each had a majority of about 100 votes. At the Town Hall the successful candi- ' dates polled 427 and 422 respectively,! 1 whilo the Libour representatives se-, 1 cured slightly over 270 votes. At Leys! ' Institute the successful men each had * majority of 60 or 70 voten. The voting for each candidate was fairly equal at Frank- ' lin Road, East Street, Eden Terrace, Par- ' nell, Grey Lynn, Newton, and Ponsonby * Road. i<w
