THE RUGBY GAME.

FRANKLIN RUGBY SUB-UNION. [BY TELECIUPH—OWN CORBESPONDENT.] PCKEKOHE, Saturday. At the annual meetinj of the Franklin Rugby Sub-Onion. Mr, W. Finlay presided over a large attendance. The balance-sheet showed a debit balance of £1 Is 3d on last year's workings. The following officers were elected;— Patron, the Right Hon. W. F. Massey; president, Mr. W. Finlay (Patuniahoe); vice-presidents. Messrs. C. Walter iOnewheroJ, E. H. Keating (Pukekohe). and 0. T. Proude \Bouibay), secretary and treasurer, Mr. P. H. Hewitt; auditor, Mr. G. G. Lrttlejohn. At the request of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society it was decided to a representative match for the Franklin Whiter Show. The prospects of a successful year's football aTe promising, as team* from Tuakau, Bombay, Onewhero, Patumahoe, and poss;b!y Pukekohe, will probably participate in the competitions There is a movement on foot to constitute a Pukekohe Rugby Union. Two Auckland teams went | on tour, one visiting Hamilton, Taumaruniu and Napier, the other playing matches at Wellington, Ckristcliurch and Ureymouth. The lose entailed by these touro amounted to £400, but good work was done by both teams in popularising the game in the Southern centres- Auckland received visits from Wellington, Hawke's Bay, South Auckland, and King Country representatives, besides which Petone and Huntlj clubs came to Auckland and played local clubs for the Thacker Challenge Shield. The report adds that the attendances at league games throughout tne season at Carlaw Park, Victoria Park, and the Domain averaged over 7000. Referring to the club competitions Ithe report states that the games were keenly contested and the standard of play snowed considerable improvement as the season progreased. In the senior grade the City Rovers were successful in ail the competitions, winning the Monteith »ShieJd for the club championship, the fioope Rooster knock-out championship, and the Challenge Shield for the interprovinci&l club championship- The standard of play in the junior grades showed much improvement compared with previous seasons and the Junior Management Committee capably controlled the affairs of the junior players. In reference to the progress of the game in the country district, the report states that the South Auckland League has been re-formed, and a large number of subleagues have affiliated with it. including Cambridge, Hamilton, Ngaruawahia. Horotiu and Huntly. The game is also flourishing at Taumarunui. During the season several Auckland teams visited the centres mentioned and played matches with the local teams. Mention is made of the fact that the league's insurance scheme for injured playere shows considerable expenditure in excess of revenue and had to be subsidised from general revenue.
