THE RUGBY GAME. THE NEWTON CLUB. The annual meeting of the Newton Rugby Football Club was. hold on Wednesday evening, Mr. T t Buchanan presiding over a good attendance. Tho balance-sheet allowed receipts £113, and expenditure £118, leaving a debit balance of £5. The following officebearers were elected;— Patron, Mr. W. Wright; president, Mr. T. Buchanan; vicepresidents, eaino as iast year, with the addition of Mesers. R. Merrick, B. Tolborne and C. Smith; delegates to the Auckland Ilugby Union, Messrs. T. Buchanan, C. B. Hinton, i. Roberts; delegate to the Junior Advisory Board, Mr, A. Tiliey; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. P. McElwain; management committee, Messrs. R. Thomas, C. Kelly, H. Dickson, C. Moynihan, L. Goodley. W. Tindall; caretaker, Mr. A. Clarke; auditors, Messrs. Hinton and Tilley; selection committee, Messrs. P. McElwain, L. Earl, R. Thomas. Several new members were elected. It was decided to commence practice at the shed on Thursday evening. There ie overy possibility of Newton entering three teams in tho competitions this season.

MABIST BROTHERS OLD BOYS. The annual meeting of Marist Brothers Old Boya' Rugby Football Club was held on Wednesday evening, Brothor Vergiliua presiding over a large attendance. The meeting was moat enthusiasts, and the prospects top the 6eason aro bright. The balance-sheet showed the club to be m a sound financial position. Fifteen new membere made application for admission, and as a result it is anticipated that the club will be represented ra the various grades. The club received a donation of a gold medal for the most improved player in the eenior and first junior teams. The following office-bearers wore elected:—President, Brother Eufebius, headmaster of the Vermont Street School; vicepres dents, last year's officers, together with several additional nominations; secretary, Mr. C. E. Anderson; treasurer, Mr. D, Coramiskej auditors, Messrs. Martin and Heighten; club captain, Mr. J, O'Brien; management comm'ttee, Messrs. O'Brien, McDonald. Early, Casey, B : ms and Martin (eenior), Mr. Heignton (junior); delegates to Auckland Rugby Union, Messrs. O'Brien, Courtney and O'Connor; delegate to Junior Advisory Board; Mr._ J. J. Hoare; selectors (senior), captain, vice-captain and coach, the latter to be appointed by the management committee; selectors (jun : or), Mwsrs. Hoare, Williams and Loft; assistant secretary and junior teams' secretary, Mr. J. Loft.

THE LEAGUE GAME.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Auckland, Rugby League met 'on Wednesday evening, Mr. J Carlaw presiding. SeveiaJ clubs submitted their annual reports and balance-sheets, which showed them to bo in good positions. . A letter, received from the Wellington League, referred to the annual conference of delegates from all League centres, which the New Zealand Council had fSVoposed, and suggested the visit, by invitation, of one or more Auckland delegates to Wellington about Easter. The letter was referred to tho New Zealand Council. A discussion arose from a report presented by the Grounds Committee, in which various recommendations wero made rcgaiding tho purchase of more Up-to-date equipment for getting Carlaw Park in order and keeping it so, and concerning acoommocjation for the caretaker. It was decided that tho establishment of more modern methods of dealing with the turf and the purchase of more efficient machinery shall be an early charge on the new season's funds. The question of the care'.aker's accommodation was deferred for a week.

POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND In view of the forthcoming visit of a delegation of League ofHciaia from New South \V negotiations for which have been aJmost comp.eted, a summary of reporte from tho provincial leagues in New Zealand has been complied by Mr. 0. Carlaw, eecrotary to the New Zealand League, setting out m oonoiße form the available receipts and the expenditure for last year, assets and liabilities, treatment of gate teoeipts, list of grounds at each centre, number of grade competitions, number of teams in each grade, and the number of players. This report .will be placed before the visiting delegation, and a tour of the Dominion will be made, interviewing tho controlling body at each centre with regard to ite position, together with all requirements for the establishment of th« League code upon a sound foundation. The position in Auckland, as outlined in the summary, shows receipts in 1921 as £2961, expenditure £2041, liabilities nil. The assets are conservatively fixed at £3600, th a being the actual capital expenditure (not tie value) on Carlaw Park. Concerning gate receipts, Carlaw Park is the only ground on which ft charge can be made, except ocm,sionally on tho municipal grounds, but the latter, w'th the exception of the Domain, are not revenue producing. Tho playing areas used last year wero Carlaw Park (belonging to the League), Victoria Park, Domain. North Shore, Grey Lynn and EUerslie, all municipal grounds j and private grounds at Northcote. Otahuhu, Richmond, Mangere. Takapuna, Kingeland and Point Chevalier. Tho Auokland League requires about 25 grounds to accommodate 100 teams. There were eight grades: Senior (7 teams), second .(7), th/rd (10), fourth (15). fifth (15), sixth (IB), sixth B (18), senior cadets (61. The position in South Auckland is: Receipts, £320; _ exponses, £300; liabilities, nil: assets, nil. All grounds aro municipally ownea, and only on occasions can a charge be made. Tho grounds are at Huntly, Taupiri, Ngaruawahia, Cambridge, Seddon Park (Hamilton), but are not avail, able every Saturday The grounds required are two at Cambridge and four at Hamilton. Players numbered 400. The grades were: Benior Kl2 teams), aecond (10), third (6), also schoolboys at Lower Waikato. On the West Coast matters were vory promising- Receipts were £225; expenses, £114; liabilities, £12: and assets, £81. Gate reocbtß at Greymouth go to the local centre, and in outside towns the .local club retains them. A ground of their own is required at Greymouth- The teams numbered 14, and players about 200. The grades were: Senior (4 teams), second (6), fourth (4). Canterbury is next to Auokland in importance. The position is set out as under:— Receipts, £413: expenses, £409. Gate receipts go t° the local centre, but a charge ia permitted oniy on six days of the year. Four municipal grounds ar© used, at a rental of £1 each ,per season, and 14 grounds are required to accommodate 450 players. The teams are graded: Senior (4), second (8), third (8), fourth (5). and sixth (6). Neither receipts nor expenses, assets nor liabilities were available from Wellington, but the whole turnover was estimated not to exoeed £500.
