JAPAN'S SUFFRAGE BILL.
m RIOTS FOLLOW DEFEAT. UPROAR IN THE DIET. Austral/an and N.Z. Cable Arsoci&tion. (Reed. 5 30 p.m.) TOKIO, Feb. 24. Tho Bill designed to extend the suffrage to all adult males in Japan was defeated by 288 votes to 159. Over 50 persons were arrested, and hundreds were injured by the police on Thursday night, when crowds of demonstrators attempted to break through the police lines and reach the headquarters, of tho Kensikai (Chief Opposition Party). Tn a fight to stem the tide of the demonstrators, the police severely bruised many persons. A number of police also received rough treatment from the crowds, who stormed the Diot in connection with the demonstrations in favour of the extension of the suffrage. Mr. Sasaki, a member of the Opposition, presented a motion to tho Diet today, demanding the impeachment of the Ministry for unconstitutional and illegal actions, resulting in the arrests at Thursday's demonstration. He asked the Speaker to leave the chair. The Speaker ordered Mr. Sasaki to leave the Chamber, and an uproar followed, and fists were shaken. Hundreds of police have been brought from neighbouring towns in anticipation of further trouble on the part of crowds.
