WASHINGTON TREATIES.
FIRST STAGE IN SENATE. PACIFIC PACT RESERVATION. COMPROMISE APPROVED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 6.30 p.m.) A. and N.Z. WASHINGTON. Feb. 25. The President has approved a compromise on the reservation to the Pacific Treaty submitted by Mr. F. B. Brandegee, reading; "The United States understands that under tho statement of the preamble and under the terms of this treaty, there is no commitment to armed force, no alliance, and no obligation to join in any defence." The Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate this morning ordered a favourable report on the Pacific Treaty, the S ipplementary Treaty excluding the Japanese homeland from the Pacific Treaty, the Naval Limitations Treaty, the Poison Gas Treaty, and the Submarine Treaty. The committee accepted tho compromise reservation to the Pacific Treaty. Mr. H. C. Lodge announced to-day that ho would present the five treaties to the Senate on Monday. The Foreign Relations Committee is expected to report favourably on the two treaties relating to China. Mr. H. C. Lodge will urge prompt action in disposing of the treaties, and night sessions of the Senate wiU probably begin on Monday.
