♦ JERSEY CATTLE BREEDERS. DEMONSTRATIONS TO FARMERS. [bi telegraph—own correspondent.] PAEROA, Saturday. The warm rains will prove most beneficial to the fanners, and following on the past fortnight's hot summer weather, will do an immense amount of good. The turnip crops have all reached the stage when a good soaking was required, and this downpour will assure the success of that crop. In spite of the stormy day about 100 farmers and others assembled at the Hauraki Agricultural and Pastoral Show Grounds at Paeroa this afternoon, when Mr. H. E. B. Watson, official demonstrator of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association, gave a most interesting lecture and demonstration on the Jersey cattle. About a dozen pedigree beasts were in the ring, and Mr. Watson illustrated the points, both good and defective. Mr. W. J. Hall, president of the Thames Valley branch of the Jersey Association, and Mr. Geo. Buchanan thanked Mr. Watson for giving the demonstration. This is the second occasion on which Mr. Watson has made an official tour through the Thames Valley and Wai. kato districts, and when interviewed subsequent to his demonstration he expressed surprise at the great improvement in the Jersey herds since his previous visit. A number of Hauraki Plains settlers, who were present at the lecture, prevailed on Mr. Watson to promise that he would visit one of the Hauraki Plains towns and give a demonstration there to about six weeks' time. In the Paeroa Returned Soldiers' Club last night a smoke concert, well attended by footballers and supporters, was held for the purpose of presenting caps won by the winning teams in last year's competitions. Mr. F. S. Flatt presided, and in presenting the caps congratulated the winners on their success. The winning teams were:—Senior grade, Hikutaia (V. Laing, captain); junior grado, Paeroa East (J. Treanor, captain); third grade, Paeroa East (Desmond Smith, captain). During the evening a number of toasts were honoured, and an enjoyable musical programme was rendered. The employees of the New Zealand Dairy Company, Paeroa branch, assembled at the" Paeroa office yesterday, when Mr. Blakeway, branch secretary, presented to Mr, G. A. Bush a handsome suit case and silver inkstand on the eve of his departure from the company's employ. Mr. Bush has held the position of accountant for some time, and has recently been appointed chief accountant to the Thames Valley Power Board, which position he takes over on March 1.
