ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD.

STRANDED YOUTH'S OFFENOE.

"BUYING" A MOTOR-CAR. A charge of having, with intent to defraud, attempted to obtain a motor-car, I valued at £426, from George Henning', Ltd., by false pretences was admitted by a youth, aged 19, who came before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Tho evidence showed that accused inspected several cars at Henning's garage, agreed to purchaso a second-hand car for £425, and signed a sale note. He told the salesman that ho had £300 due to him from the Whangarei branch of the International Harvester Company as wages and commission, but the money would not be available for about three weeks. The salesman would not give possession of the car until a deposit nad been paid, but after accused had apparently sent a telegram to his father for some money, gave him an hour's instruction in driving and told him to return next day with a deposit. Accused came back, but as he had no money the salesman became suspicious and refused to do business with him. An employee of the International Harvester Compnnv slated that accused had not been employed by the Auckland branch, or to his knowledge by any other, and that the company did not owe him any money. In a statement produced by Detective McHufth accused said he came to town with about £2 in his possession. He was stranded when he attempted to obtain the car and his father had refused to send him any money. His representations to the. salesman were < false as he had "never been employed by the International Harvester Company and had no money due to him. Had he secured the car he would have driven to Hikurangi and started a taxi service. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. ,» , On account of accused* age the magistrate made an order prohibiting publication of his name.
