MIGRATION PROBLEMS.
EFFECT OF COST OF TRAVEL.
MATTER FOR ATTENTION. LONDON Feb. 10. The annual report of the Overseas Settlement Committee for 1921 states that the lack of employment was sufficiently serious in the Dominions to restrict migration other than of landworkers. Another adverse factor was the high cost of travel, which called for attention when the minimum fare to Ginada was £14 10s and to Australia and New Zealand £36. The present ordinary minimum fares of £18 and £40 are prohibitive to migrants lacking private means, and the number of former servicemen desirous of emigrating is now diminishing. " The problem." the report adds, " increasingly becomes the provision of openings for the rising generation." Referring to domestic workers in the Dominions, the report says that the birthrate is being affected in tho country districts, and sowing and harvesting are hampered by the lack of domestic help in a farmer's Home. The committee reiterates its opinion that labour organisations the world recognise the importance of migration and are not opposed to it.
