THE WAR AGAINST RATS.
AN INGENIOUS TRAP DEVICE. The campaign against rats is discovering new devices for defeating the wariness of these vermin. That the simplest means are often effective has been demonstrated by an enthusiast in a large Government store. A heavy flat sheet of iron was laid on the floor with one end supported by an ordinary " figure four" trigger arrangement such as is used for the well-known four-brick bird trap, The rats walk under an apparently harmless sheet of iron to nibble at the" bait on the trigger. Th» first setting of this apparatus trapped and killed two rats simultaneously. The lid of an ordinary case can be used if some heavy material is attached on the upper side to give it the necessary weight. A ship's officer recently informed an inspector that he had seen a lot of snaring carried out by fixing a smooth-running thin wiro noose outside the rat holes. A rat follows the same instincts as a rabbit, and on meeting an obstruction about the head pushes further into it. This offers a further field of endeavour to those who have met with trap-shy rats on their premises,
