BRASS BANDS' CONTEST.
QUICKSTEP COMPETITION. [by telegraph.— pbess association.] WELLINGTON. Sunday. In the presence of 12,000 spectators at the Athletic Park on Saturday 22 bands took part in the quickstep competition of the bands contest and in a massed bands display. The competition was divided into two sections, fJOO points being allotted to drill and march discipline and 100 to music. Colonel Beere, Major Johnston, Captain Williams, and Sergeant-Major Laffey judged the military operations and Mr. H. Shugg, of Melbourne, the music. The competition occupied six hours. The first 10 were:—lnvercargill Hibernian marching 1893, music, 92, total 281}; Weilington Tramways, 171, 88—259: Wanganui Garrison, 166£, 86— First Canterburv M.R.. 161}, 90-251}; Gisborne City Band, 168J, 79-247£; Hastings Town Band, 171, 72—243; Auckland Military . Band, 162 i, 79—2415; Woolston "Brass Band, 1553, 83-238}; Palmeraton North Municipal, 168}, 67-2353; Marten Muni, cipal. 164}, 70-234}. The remainder in order of merit were; Wellington Artillery, Westport Garrison, Hamilton Municipal. Second Otago Regiment, Wellington Waterside Workers, Masterton Municipal, 2nd Wellington, Queen Alexandra M.R., Hawera Citizens', Fourth Wellington Regiment, Christchurch Tramways, Nelson Silver, and Wellington Patriotic Society.
