TWO OUTSTANDING MATCHES.

Tho Auckland representative lawn tennis team visaed Hamilton on Saturday ana played a uiatcii against tne Yvaiaato representatives, winning by 17 games to t>. Li ulortunately Vvaikato were witliout the services ot Dr. Laurenson, Dr. liray and Wiiite-l J arsona, wlucti considerably weakened their chances. The match around which the moat interest centred was mat between K. L. Bartleot and A. W- Sims. In the Auckland championship these players met in tne final, when. Sims won m straight sots- By arrangement, the match at Hamilton was played under championship conditions (five advantage sets), end tho other matches were suspended temporarily, in order that the competitors and spectators alike could see tho match of the day. The courts were slightly slower than those in Auckland. Sims showed his superiority from the commencement and played championship tenuis during tho whole contest, displaying a liberal variety oi shots. Taking advantage of tho somowhat slow court he used mostly a baokhand chop, based on lilden's wellknown shot, and, getting a good length, pasted Bartleet's backhand. The latter was not at homo at first to the slower play of the courts, but, becoming more accustomed to the conditions as play proceeded, put vn eorno fine driving whenever * good length shot went to his forehand within reach, and on hie backhand was managing to get thorn back, but more as defensive shots. The iinal rally of the match was probably a record for steadiness combined with fine driving, the one determined to gain, the other to defend tho match point. The ball must have passed the net considerably over 20 times before Sims finished with a good one on to the backhand aide lino and ended what was a fine exposition of tho game, winning 6—2, G—3, 6—3. The next best match, Robson and Bartleet v. A. W. Sims and S. A. Sims, came as a surprise. Finding holes in the combination of his opponents, the champion played a forceful game. Tho Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's C grade competition was concluded on Saturday, being won by tho Mount Albeit club, which went through tho competition without a loss.
