BILLS OF SALE.
CHARGE OF FRAUD FAILS. [bt teleohaph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday,
At the Supreme Court Alice Lomas waß charged with obtaining sums totalling £186 from Lazarus Wolfe Baikind, moneylender, by false pretences. The accused was formerly the proprietress of 0 boarding-house and apparently had business dealings with Balkind for a number of years. Sometimes she would get an advance and gWe a biU of sale. Then Bhe would pay it off and get the bill of sale back, then get another advance and give the bill back. It was in this manner thai the charges arose. The case against Mrs. Lomafl was that when she gavo tho bills of sale to which the charges related, the furniture in the bills was not in her possession. For the defence it was contended that Balkind had been offered tho money but had urged the accused to use it to pay off another creditor. There had been no intent to defraud. Thore was a great difference between unwillingness and inability to pay. The accused was acquitted.
