AUCKLAND HARBOUR.

Sir, —There is much discussion at all seasons of the year regarding the beauties of Auckland. The Aucklander invariably remarks to the visitor, "The harbour it beautiful, isn't it?" More truly should he say, " We had a beautiful harbour." For what has been done to beautify the waterfront at any point of the whole great bay ? Who sanctioned or perpetuated the vile centipede of crudity that stretches across the now muddy expanse of Hobson Bay—that sewer. Is there one mile of marine drive? Too much, waterfrontage is privately-owned, or in the j hands of syndicates to highwater mark. There is yet unspoilt one position which ! offers a chance of redemption. That high i headland between Hobson and Ors.kei I Bays, commanding as it docs an unexI celied view of the harbour, lends itself to the scliemo of forming both park and memorial 011 a grand and spectacular scale. I believe it is reserved at present 1 for some model suburb scheme. Who should be the chosen few to enjoy such privileges? Something over £112,000 has been collected for war memorial purposes, 1 believe, and sudi being the case, surely there are those locally interested who could, inspired with a little altruistic spirit, further some such attempt to do a little for the harbour, rather than contentedly boast oi the remnants of beauty left of'the Creator's handiwork. There are the bones of the idea, let others pi'k them, and possibly evolve a memorial worthy of the "boys," where picnic "hogs" would not break bottles or litter the cround with their leavings. r WIN.
