REV. JOHN KING DAVIS.
A well-known Auckland educationalist, the Rev. John King Davis, died yesterday at his residence, Westbourne Road, Reraueni, at the ago of 64. Mr. Davis had lived in Auckland for the greater part of his lifp, and, until his retirement through ill-health a few months ago, was an assistant-master at the Auckland Boys' Grammar School, where he was respected by masters and boys alike. Born at Waimate North, Bay of Islands, deceased was tho son of the late Rev. Richard Davis, of the Church Missionary Society. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School at Parnell and at St. John's College, Tamaki. In 1880 lie gained a senior university scholarship and took his B.A. degree the following year. In 1882 he obtained his M.A.' degree with firtt-class honours in Latin and Greek. He was ordained deacon in 1881 and priest in 1882 in old St. Paul's Church by the Primate of New Zealand, the late Right Rov. Bishop Cowie. Mr. Davis acted as assistantcurate of All Saints', I'onsonby, from 1881 to 1883, and held the same position in tho Holy Sepulchre parish from 1883 to 1886. During the following three years he was curate-m-charge of the Mount Albert district. In 1890 he was appointed an assistant-master at the Boys' Gramma* School, and at the time of his retirement was history and commerce master. His extensive knowledge of church and educational institutions in Auckland was employed in his book, "A History of St. John's College." Mr. Davis is survived by Mrs. Davis, two sons, and one daughter. The elder son is Mr. O'Dounell Davis, of Christchurch. MR. P. C. CORLISS. COMMISSIONER OF STAMPS.
